Kythera(Kythira in Greek) is a perfect island to spend a few days with your family. It is not too big, not too small either. It takes no more than 30-45 minutes to drive from one side of the island to the other. The children do not have to endure long journeys and the parents do not hear the traditional refrain ” we are almost there? Unlike other Greek islands, Kythera is not very touristy. The atmosphere is calm.
What to do in Kythera? Lots of things! Swimming in crystal clear waters, visiting small villages, walking in the valleys, natural waterfalls, traditional taverns… there is something for everyone. Something to delight young and old alike!
Direction Kythera
We left on a Friday evening for Kythera. The island is easily accessible, it takes only 50 minutes by plane from Athens. The Olympic Air company offers several flights per week. In addition, at the Athens airport, there is a counter reserved for families to check in their luggage, so there is no waiting. And on board the plane, the children are entitled to some nice attentions: coloring, snack.
You can also go to Kythera by boat. It takes 1h15 from Neapolis (Peloponnese).
Cytherea being known as the birthplace of Aphrodite, it is the occasion to talk about Greek mythology on the way.

On site, it is preferable to have a car. If you don’t take your own vehicle, the island’s rental companies can provide you with baby car seats or booster seats for older children.
Arrival in our mill
We had chosen an original accommodation: a windmill (Windmill Studios). Great! The kids loved it. Lots of stories ran through their heads and of course, they sang “Meunier, tu dors” over and over for 48 hours. But that’s a small inconvenience compared to the stars that shone in their eyes.
Who says mill says… wind! The house is therefore very pleasant in summer because you can open the small windows and have air. When the days are still cool, radiators, blankets and space heaters are available. So you don’t feel the cold even on cool nights.
Warning: the mill is not suitable for toddlers as you have to take stairs to get from one floor to the other. To be recommended from 4 years old.
What to see? What to do in Kythera?
There is no shortage of child-friendly activities in Kythera. There are beautiful villages to walk around: Kythira (Chora), Kapsali, Potamos, Mylopotamos, Avlemonas. The children run in the streets, try to catch the cats.
In the port of Kapsali, we advise you to first walk along the bay. And then to continue your way after the beach in order to climb up to the small lighthouse (3-4 minutes of ascent by stairs, very easy “ascension”) then to the abandoned chapel in order to enjoy a very nice view on the port.
A visit to the citadel (kastro) is a must. You can reach it on foot from the Chora. The site is superb and appeals to children with its old cannons and ruined castles. The parents enjoy the magnificent view.
We also highly recommend you to visit the beautiful Neraida waterfall, in the village of Mylopotamos. It is easily accessible by a path and some stairs. The place is also completely shaded.
The beaches of Kythera
On the island of Kythera, there are several family-friendly beaches. We recommend in particular:
– the beach of Kapsali, on the port, lined with cafes, with transparent and shallow waters
– another family beach, the beach of Agia Pelagia
– and also Diakofti, a convenient beach with children. The waters are turquoise and shallow. In addition, we can see in the distance a ship aground, which pleases the children
Where to eat with children in Kythera?
There are lots of nice options. Here are some suggestions of places to eat with your children:
– Pierros in Livadi: a traditional tavern with a friendly owner who takes the children into the kitchen to choose what they like. Spaghetti bolognaise, French fries, meat or Greek specialties, young and old alike will enjoy
– The creperie Vanilia on the port Kapsali is held by a French couple. The pancakes are generous and make an ideal meal with children. In addition, the service is fast.
– You can also stay in one of the tavernas by the sea in Agia Pelagia: the children play on the beach while the parents eat.
– Finally, if you’re in the mood for a simple meal of grilled meats and souvlaki (skewers), try Zorba’s in Kythira.
