The Athenian taxi is easily identified by its yellow color. And you will see them everywhere. If you use this means of transportation, don’t forget to bring cash . Even if more and more of them accept credit cards, cash is generally the rule, especially for small amounts.

Find a cab in Athens

You can easily find taxis in Athens. They are usually located near tourist sites, train stations and airports. You can also call them on the street if they are empty.

Nevertheless, we advise you to download the very practical application FreeNow (formerly TaxiBeat) It allows you to locate cabs near you and to order them in one click. You pay nothing online and in a few minutes, your cab is there. These are standard yellow cabs and not private drivers. The app also gives an estimated price of the race. From June 16, 2022, a cab reservation fee of 2€ will also be charged.

There are also private vehicles that run errands. The famous Uber is also present in Athens.

Book a cab-taxi

If you want to be sure to find a cab, we advise you to book your cab. For your transfer from the airport or your port of arrival or the day of your departure, do not wait until the last moment and book your vehicle.

By FreeNow, this is not possible. But several companies offer transfers: Rideways and Welcome Pickups among others. We have done several tests and we like Welcome PickUps (simple, efficient and a few euros more than the normal cab). Example Athens-Airport during the day = 44€ instead of 42€ by the classic cab.

How much do cabs cost in Athens?

As far as fares are concerned, the cab remains very affordable. For a short trip, it is necessary to count approximately 5€. However, from the airport to downtown Athens there is a flat rate of 42€ per day. For Piraeus, count on around 58€.

Yellow cabs have a meter. Make sure it is on. It is possible that at the time of departure, a small amount is indicated, corresponding to the station or airport pick-up.
