Thessaloniki is a dynamic, young and multicultural city, where the food is particularly good. Here are the hotels and restaurants in Thessaloniki that we particularly liked. A very personal, 100% subjective selection. We hope you enjoy it. Don’t hesitate to give us your opinion in the comments at the end of this article.
Where to eat in Thessaloniki? Our favorite restaurants
- Sempriko (2 Fragkon) is one of our favorites. Set in a quiet location far from the main tourist thoroughfares, this restaurant serves excellent food. Modern Greek cuisine. Generous portions. Very good value for money. About 15-20€/person.
- Nea Folia (Aristomenous 4), in an unassuming little street, the facade doesn’t look much, but the food is excellent! An address not to be missed.
- Fancy a “pita gyros“? Then direction Diavasi (13 P. Mela). On the menu are soft, flavorful gyros and succulent soutzoukakia (beef meatballs). All served with salads and home fries. Price: €10-15/person
- The Extravaganza restaurant (8 Episkopou Amvrosiou) offers eclectic, refined and tasty cuisine in a modern setting: ceviche, bao bun, vegetable carpaccio and more. Pasta carbonara with truffles is also delicious.
- 7 Thalasses (10 Kalapothaki St.) is an excellent fish restaurant in the center of town, with a terrace overlooking a pedestrian street. Hip decor. Higher prices than traditional taverns.
- If you’re in the mood for French food, check out the Charlie D restaurant (10 Komninon, opposite the City Hotel). With its Parisian brasserie ambience, the menu is designed by French chef Arnaud Bignon. Dishes: between €10 and €20.
- For a good breakfast or brunch, we recommend Estrella (48 Pavlou Mela). The perfect place to start the day!
- Kitchen Bar (Αποθήκη Β2 Α’ Προβλήτα Λιμένα – on the rehabilitated old harbor) is a nice place to drink coffee on the docks, by the sea with the added bonus of a view over the bay.
- Full of Meze (3 Katouni) in the Laladika district serves hearty mezze, or “Greek-style tapas”. Traditional dishes from all over Greece are served in a sunny square. For connoisseurs, a wide choice of ouzo and tsipouro. Very reasonable prices (10-15€/pers).
- Finally, let’s not forget To Igglis (32 Irodotou): a very old tavern frequented by British soldiers during the Balkan War. Warm, home-like atmosphere and good value for money.
Gourmet addresses for a sweet break
Thessaloniki also boasts a number of gourmet addresses for a sweet break. The dessert tradition is very much alive here, not least because of the city’s historical links with the Orient. Brioches, honey pastries, loukoums, rice cakes, halva… you’re in for a treat.
- Chatzis ( 3 stores: 24 Mitropoleos, 50 Venizelos and 73 Them. Sofouli). A Thessaloniki institution, renowned for its syrup-soaked cakes.
- Trigona Elenidi (Dim. Gounari 13), for the best Trigona in town.
- Terkenlis (4 Aristotelous) offers excellent buns (tsoureki). A must-taste.
- Blé (19 Agias Sofias): a rather chic patisserie offering tasty sweet treats and savory snacks.
- Fregio (several stores: 7 Kouskoura and 3 Aristotelous ) is a very good ice cream parlour. Creamy homemade ice cream and fluffy waffles, mmmmm!
Where to stay in Thessaloniki?
There are many hotels in Thessaloniki. You’ll find a vast choice on Booking. Here is a short selection:
- City Hotel Thessaloniki: an extremely well-located hotel, right in the center but on a quiet street. Modern, clean and nicely decorated. For families, there are beautiful family suites with two separate bedrooms. We really enjoyed it.
- The Caravan: we really liked this hotel. Very friendly atmosphere, particularly welcoming staff, excellent value for money. The family room is spacious and has a pleasant terrace. the little extra? A “pillow bar” (try it, you’ll see 😉
- Electra Palace: a chic establishment with old-fashioned charm and an excellent location. Beautiful terrace, ideal for a drink at sunset.
- Daios Luxury Living: we didn’t test it personally, but this hotel in Thessaloniki was recommended to us. Both on the seafront and in the city center, it boasts a perfect location. The rooms are said to be comfortable.
