Turquoise waters and white sand, Lefkada (combines all the clichés of the Greek island paradise. Located on the country’s west coast, this Ionian island is a 5-hour drive from Athens. Lefkada is one of the ideal destinations for a short road trip. Accessible via a movable bridge, there’s no need to worry about ferry schedules or tickets!
Lefkada, the Ionian island with the world’s most beautiful beaches
Full of promise, full of opportunity, Lefkada, generous and sublime, with its 120 kms of coastline, is an ideal island to visit by car, motorcycle or boat. Whether untouched or developed, the island’s reputation is built on its beaches. Some are dedicated to water sports (windsurfing, surfing, wakeboarding…). Others, more exotic, are ideal for lounging.
We’re particularly fond of Gialos, Porto Katsiki and Egremni beach, all three located in the southwest of the island and considered some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The surrounding chalk cliffs on which the sun reflects give them a supernatural, cinematic quality.
Further northwest, the beaches of Kathisma and Mylos are also very pretty and well worth a visit.
Some beaches are more easily accessible by boat. Rent a small boat for the day or a sailboat to discover these beaches and the surrounding area. In particular, the island of Skorpios, one of the private islands of Onassis. Or the island of Meganisi and its blue Papanikolis cave, famous for having housed a submarine during the Second World War.
Lefkada is surrounded by more than twenty islands, so you’ll have a busy day!
Discovering the island’s interior
Mountains, forests, lakes, gorges, waterfalls and beaches – the landscape on the island of Lefkada is multi-faceted. The country’s typical dry regions stand side by side with olive groves, cypresses and pines.
It’s really essential to get motivated and get away from the sublime beaches to explore the island. Take the time to visit all that Lefkada has to offer. Discover the Dimosari waterfalls and lakes in the heart of the island. Or the summit of Profitis Ilias (near Egouvli), with its tiny church and 360° panorama of the island. Not forgetting the Panagia Faneromeni monastery, its museum of sacred icons and its mini zoo.
Walking the streets of Lefkada
Lefkada City, the main town, is very lively. Bars, restaurants and boutiques abound, especially around the central square, a stone’s throw from the famous floating bridge linking the island to the mainland. As on all the Greek islands, the charming narrow streets of the inner city make for delightful strolls.
The archaeological museum will tell you all you need to know about the town and the island, long disputed by the Venetians and Ottomans.
And because Lefkada also lives by night, we’ll extend the evening in the capital’s friendly wine bars to sample the local vintages.
Stroll through the coastal villages of Lefkada
The small fishing village of Agios Nikitas in the north-west, some 15 km from the main town, is also recommended. Authentic, sincere and typical, its little port is charming. Just like its main street, where small shops, tourist boutiques, bars and taverns abound.
Last but not least, Nidri and its marina is certainly the most popular place to visit, along with Lefkada City. Several hotels and apartments are available close to the center. More secluded villas in the mountains are recommended. In addition to sublime views, they are far from the noise of the city.
And why not take a trip to Kefalonia?
Apart from Lefkada, a stopover in Fiskardo, located in the northern part of Kefalonia (an island at the south of Lefkada) is a must. This very touristy village, elegant and colorful with Italian influences in its architecture, is the ideal spot for a gentle end to the day. Renowned and luxurious, with a touch of worldliness, it’s the place to be for an aperitif on the harbor in front of the most beautiful yachts, or a romantic stroll at sunset.
