1 – Visit the port of Pigadia
If the island of Karpathos has a small airport, you can also disembark at Karpathos by ferry via its main port, Pigadia.
- Stroll along the lively waterfront, with its many restaurants, bars and boutiques.
- Enjoy a tasty meal at Manolis for excellent value and a breathtaking view of the port!
- Don’t miss a visit to the archaeological museum not far from the marina. It houses a collection of objects and artifacts discovered on Karpathos and consists of three rooms, from the Neolithic to the Byzantine periods.

2 – Take a trip to Arkasa and the sublime Agios Nikolaos beach

It’s impossible to miss the timeless charm of Olympos, which was cut off from the world and the rest of the island for so long. A life without conveniences is a thing of the past, and a village now open to the world is well worth a visit. Wear good shoes for the trails leading to the remote beaches of Farokli or Diafani. Along the way, you’ll see water mills and enjoy breathtaking views. More experienced climbers venture to one of the 32 climbing sites, such as the Flaskia Gorge, or to one of the 350 hiking routes, varying in difficulty. A unique experience!

Head back down to the east coast, to the sublime Apella beach, accessible via a small path. - Shepherd’s Trail: This iconic Karpathos hiking trail traverses spectacular scenery, from verdant meadows to rugged mountains. It links the villages of Olympos and Spoa, offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the hinterland. This hike also allows you to discover the island’s traditional pastoral life.
- Apella trail : The Apella trail links the village of Volada to the magnificent Apella beach. The hike also takes you through gorges, pine forests and mountainous landscapes. At the end of the hike, you can reward yourself with a swim in the crystal-clear waters of Apella beach.
- Lefkos to Mesochori trail: This trail follows the southern coast of Karpathos, offering breathtaking panoramic sea views. The hike starts in the coastal village of Lefkos and takes you through secluded coves, sheer cliffs and steep coastal paths to the charming village of Mesochori.
- Climbing Mount Lastos : For more experienced hikers looking for a challenge, climbing Mount Lastos is an exciting option. For thrill-seekers, head south to the best windsurfing spots. The village ofAfiartis, close to the small airport, is one of the most popular spots for windsurfers and surfers. In the area you’ll find surf schools, typical taverns, simple or luxurious accommodation and certainly some new friends!

Here are some of the best spots for these activities on the island:
- Chicken Bay: As mentioned above, Chicken Bay is a versatile spot that is also suitable for sand yachting and windsurfing. Its shallow waters and constant winds make it an ideal spot for beginners and intermediate practitioners.
- Gun Bay: Also known as the Lagoon, Gun Bay is a shallow lagoon located near Arkasa, on the island’s west coast. It’s a perfect place for sand yachting thanks to its vast open spaces.
- Devil’s Bay: Devil’s Bay, located on the east coast of Karpathos, offers ideal conditions for windsurfing due to its stronger winds and bigger waves. It’s a spot more suited to experienced windsurfers.
- Mikri Amopi Beach: This sandy beach on the south coast of Karpathos offers good conditions for sand yachting and windsurfing, especially in moderate winds.
