Naxos, in Greece’s Aegean Sea, is the largest of the Cyclades islands. With its airport, it’s a good base for visiting other Cycladic islands by ferry, such as Amorgos, Donoussa and Iraklia. Transport in Naxos : here are a few practical tips for getting around Naxos: How do I get there? How to get around the island?

How to get to Naxos

Naxos has excellent transport links (air, ferry). It is therefore easily accessible from both Athens and France, for example.

By plane

The island of Naxos has its own airport offering local flights. If you’re short on time, Paris is only 5 hours away by plane (including a stopover in Athens). You’ll find the best flight deals on Aegean.

By ferry

Like all the islands, Naxos also has its own port at the town of Naxos. It’s also a convenient link between Naxos and the Greek mainland and other Cycladic islands. Crossings to Naxos have existed since the Piraeus (between 3h and 5h depending on the type of boat), but also from Rafina. The latter is very convenient, as it’s only 20 minutes from the airport by cab, and less imposing than Piraeus. You can book most crossings on the Ferry Hopper website.

Naxos is also an excellent base for visiting the neighbouring neighboring islands (Paros, Amorgos, Koufounissia, Mykonos, Syros…).

Getting around Naxos

As Naxos is a large island, it offers a variety of transport options.

By car

We strongly recommend renting a vehicle on the island if you wish to explore it in its entirety. For vehicle rentals (cars, motorcycles, etc.), you’ll find numerous rental companies at the port and airport. If you wish to book in advance, we advise you to go through Rentalcars which allows you to compare different rental companies and see the best offers. Motoland also offers quads, buggies and scooters.

By bus

Other transport services in Naxos are also well developed. A bus system serves the main towns and some villages. You can find bus timetables on this website.

By cab

For short trips, you can also use the cab service, but there aren’t many on the island, and it gets very crowded in high season. What’s more, they take advantage of this strong demand to raise their rates. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, we advise you to book your cab via Welcome Pickups.

By bike

Bicycles are also available for hire. Beware, as the island is very mountainous, you’ll need good legs. The agency RealBike offers both classic and electric bikes for hire.
