Located south of Naxos in the Lesser Cyclades, Koufonissia (also spelled Koufonisia, Koufonissi or Koufonisi) is one of our favorite islands. Here are some tips and practical information to help you plan your trip and prepare for your vacation in Koufonisia.
Why go to Koufonisia?
If you like to relax and swim in translucent waters, you’re in for a treat! The beaches are splendid and the color of the water is so beautiful it looks like it’s been retouched on Photoshop. Life is easy in Koufounissia, and time flies by.
On the other hand, if you don’t like beaches, the island of Koufounissia will be of little interest to you. After all, the island is small and there’s not much to do apart from swim… You can, however, enjoy some lovely hikes. You can also take an evening stroll around Chora (but you’ll soon get the hang of it) and stroll along the harbour.
How to get to Koufonissia
There is no airport in Koufonisia. The only way to reach the island is by boat.
- from Athens: There are several weekly connections between the port of Piraeus and the island of Koufounissia. The crossing takes between 4h30 and 5h if you take a fast boat; 9h by ferry.
- from Naxos: Daily crossings between Naxos and Koufounissia. Allow less than an hour by express boat, at least 2 hours by ferry.
- from other Cycladic islands: Koufonissia is also connected to the islands of Amorgos, Folegandros, Milos, Mykonos, Paros, Santorini and the other islands of the Lesser Cyclades.
You’ll find all the information and timetables on the Ferry Hopper website. Depending on the boat and route, crossing times (and prices) can vary considerably. Personally, we always book our ferry or boat tickets via Ferry Hopper the platform is practical, easy to use. And best of all, there are no hidden commissions or fees. This is the cheapest way to buy ferry tickets online.
Getting around Koufonisia
- There’s no need to rent a vehicle here.
- Walking is certainly the best way to discover the island. The distances are not great, and the trails take you through enchanting landscapes.
- There is a bus service serving various points on the island.
- You can also rent a bike. The island’s flat geography lends itself well to this.
- Finally, there are small boats in the harbor that take you to beaches inaccessible on foot, and to Kato Koufonissia.
Choose a hotel in Koufonisia
With the island becoming increasingly fashionable, it’s best to book well in advance if you’re planning a July-August stay.
- Our favourite: the Keros Art Hotel. It’s very well located, close to the sea and the city center, has a swimming pool, a delicious breakfast and particularly attentive staff.
- The Myrto hotel is also very good: modern, quiet, with a lovely sea view.
- We also recommend Apollon Koufounissi studios located on Fanos beach, with magnificent sea views. The location is superb.
- For families, we recommend the Koufonisia & Spa hotel, with its swimming pool. Unfortunately, it’s very (even too) expensive in summer.
- Finally, take a look at Booking where you’ll find several accommodations in Koufonisia.
You’ll also find a number of rooms and guesthouses right on the port.
