Between Naxos and Amorgos lies a string of small, tranquil islands: the Little Cyclades. Bordered by a turquoise sea, these Greek islands have a heavenly air. A must for beach lovers!
The Little Cyclades?
In fact, although there are some twenty islets, the four inhabited islands that make up this micro-archipelago are generally referred to as “Little Cyclades”:
These islands are quiet, small and sparsely populated. With the exception of July and August, they are still relatively untouristy (with the possible exception of Koufounissia, which is becoming increasingly popular). And above all, all these islands have one thing in common: their dream beaches! Everywhere, the sea is incredibly translucent, a beautiful turquoise color.
What’s more, you don’t need a car. These islands can all be visited on foot. It’s a great place for hiking, in an enchanting setting.
And how do you get to the Little Cyclades?
- In summer, there are regular crossings between the port of Piraeus (Athens) and the Lesser Cyclades, notably with Blue Star Ferries.
- There are also daily connections between Naxos and the Lesser Cyclades.
- And the small express ferry Skopelitis-Small Cyclades line serves Naxos, Amorgos and the Perites Cyclades daily. It even runs in winter (not every day, but several times a week nonetheless). If you want to take your vehicle on this small ferry, be sure to book early, as it can only hold a dozen vehicles at most.
You’ll find all the information and timetables on the Ferry Hopper website. Depending on the boat and the route taken, crossing times can vary considerably (and so can prices). The advantage of the Ferry Hopper website is that you can compare offers from different companies in the blink of an eye. It’s easy to use, especially for island-to-island bookings (tried and tested).
How long can you stay in the Cyclades?
Plan ahead at least five days to discover the four inhabited islands of the Lesser Cyclades. If you have less time, make a choice and visit only two or three islands.. It would be a shame to see them in a hurry. For one of the attractions of these islands is their gentle way of life. Here, we take our time and enjoy.
If you have several days’ vacation available, we strongly advise you to combine your vacation in the Lesser Cyclades with a stay on the island of Naxos. This cuts the journey, facilitates sea connections and offers a good balance between active and relaxing holidays.
Which island to choose in the Lesser Cyclades?
- Donoussa
is the furthest island from Naxos and certainly the most peaceful. It’s almost like being on a desert island (except in July and August). In addition to its beautiful sandy beaches (the island’s main attraction), there’s a pretty, picturesque village. You can also go hiking. In short, an island to recommend to those seeking peace and quiet. - Koufounissia
has become a fashionable island in recent years. Young, lively atmosphere in the evenings. There are comfortable hotels, good restaurants and a number of attractive boutiques. Once again, the island’s main attractions are its crystal-clear sea and golden sandy beaches. - Schinoussa
is an arid island, ideal for walking, renowned for the beauty of its landscapes. It’s full of pretty beaches, many of which have the added advantage of being tree-lined, offering shade. It’s an island with good food and a family-friendly atmosphere. - Finally, Iraklia is a quiet, simple and pleasant little island. There are no souvenir stores, luxury hotels or trendy bars here. Calm, rejuvenating atmosphere.
Choose a hotel in the Cyclades
With the exception of Koufounissia, the islands of the Lesser Cyclades have limited accommodation capacity. So it’s best to avoid booking at the last minute, especially for a July-August stay.
