Cyclades: Folegandros, the peaceful island

The island of Folegandros is one of our favorites. This small island of around 30 square kilometers, located in the Cyclades archipelago between the islands of Milos and Santorini, is well worth a visit. A beautiful Greek island, a hiker’s paradise, with lovely beaches and a superb Cycladic village. Tranquil, wild and mountainous, it possesses a special charm. How do I get there? where to stay on Folegandros? We recommend :

Why go to Folegandros?

Folegandros is a delightful island. Located just an hour by speedboat from Santorini, it offers almost as much charm as its famous “neighbor”, minus the crowds, glitz and inflated prices.

The island is mountainous and arid. Between 1920 and 1969, it was the place of exile for political deportees. Over the last twenty years or so, the island has become a popular tourist destination. Nevertheless, it has retained its authentic character.

We love Folegandros for :

  • first and foremost, its wild coves with crystal-clear waters, reached by donkey paths or caique boats
  • but also its wild nature, which offers a wide range of hiking opportunities
  • its delightful capital, Chora: a typically Cycladic village. It’s impossible not to fall under the spell of the narrow streets, white and blue houses, squares with a church and a few tavernas.
  • not to mention its charming restaurants and lively nightlife. The evenings have a festive atmosphere in the squares of Chora.

How to get to Folegandros

Folegandros can be reached:

  • by boat from the port of Piraeus. It takes around ten hours by ferry, and between 4 and 6 hours by speedboat (Sea Jets and Hellenic Seaways).
  • by boat from other Cycladic islands (Santorini, Milos, Naxos, Sifnos, Serifos, Paros, Ios and Amorgos).

To see the different crossings, take a look at Ferry Hopper. Tickets can be booked and paid for online. It’s very convenient and, above all, the site charges no commissions or extra fees. It’s the cheapest online ticketing service on the market.

You can also get around the island by bus (there are regular buses in high season). However, if you can, we recommend that you rent a vehicle (scooter, quad, car) to explore every corner of Folegandros. Personally, we always use the RentalCars website, which allows us to compare offers from different agencies in the blink of an eye.

To get to the beach, you can take the caiques that leave from the port.

Where to stay in Folegandros?

We really recommend that you stay in or near Chora, so that you can walk around, dine easily and stroll through the narrow streets in the evening. You’ll find a wide choice of hotels on the Booking. If you’re looking to treat yourself, we recommend the Aspalathras White Hotel.

And for a luxurious interlude, choose the Hotel Anemi. Located close to the port, this superb Cycladic-style establishment boasts a beautiful swimming pool.
