Baba au Rum is one of the most famous cocktail bars in Athens. And its reputation does not stop at the borders of Greece: it is indeed regularly quoted as being one of the best bars in the world. In 2024, it occupied the 25th place in the ranking of “the world’s 50 best bars” and is part of the selection of the very sharp “world’s best bars“. Its notoriety is not usurped.
Baba au Rum: a must of the Athenian nightlife
Baba au Rum (B.A.R for short) is located in a small street between Syntagma and Monastiraki. We highly recommend it: impeccable decoration, just like the music and the service. The atmosphere is deliciously retro.
There are a few tables at the back and a nice area for standing drinks. But the place to be is at the bar. Sit back and admire the dexterity of the bartenders. They prepare the cocktails before your eyes: they meticulously cut the fresh and home-made ingredients, weigh, mix, filter and above all shake their shakers at a lively pace. Here, the cocktail is an art and it shows!
The atmosphere is pleasantly relaxed. Baba au Rum is a bar to sit and linger. Ideal for the late afternoon and early evening or to continue until late at night.
The place is completely non-smoking, which is not so common in the center of Athens.
Baba au Rum : what to choose ? Rum of course but not only…
Baba Au Rum offers a remarkable selection of spirits with – as the name suggests – a special emphasis on rum. In fact, there are over a hundred different varieties on the shelves! To be enjoyed alone or as a cocktail. Here you can drink rums from Guyana, treat yourself to aged rums from Barbados, taste Cuban gems or Caribbean treasures.
Those who are not rum lovers can rest assured. The menu is extensive and the choice is vast. Classic or original cocktails, beers, spirits or non-alcoholic refreshments: the choice is yours!
We love the “Spicy Baba n°7” cocktail, one of the house specialties made with rum from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, ginger, red fruits and lime. Deliciously spicy, well balanced and perfectly balanced! We ask for more (in moderation, of course).
Within a 300 meter radius you will also find other famous bars in Athens for their cocktails: The Clumsies, Gin Joint, Noël, Drunk Sinatra, Tailor Made, Speakeasy.
