Kalavrita is a pretty mountain village in a sumptuous setting. It’s the starting point for many outdoor activities. In summer, hiking and mountain biking, in winter for the small ski resort.

How to get to Kalavrita

Situated at the top of the Vouraikos Gorge, the village can be reached either by road either by road or by train.

Whatever your choice, you won’t be disappointed by this trip. In fact, it allows us to discover a mountain landscape far removed from our imaginary Greek standards. Vertiginous ascent through gorges, past monasteries, olive groves and vineyards, before arriving in the village of Kalavrita just below Mount Chelmos.

A village steeped in history

The village has a pretty central square with trees surrounding the church. Its small pedestrian street, lined with tavernas, sports stores and cafés, leads to the station and has a certain charm all of its own.

The village seems very peaceful, yet it bears the scars of a real tragedy that took place on December 13, 1943. In response to the death of 81 German soldiers killed by resistance fighters, Nazi troops carried out a veritable massacre in the village. They coldly executed all the men in the village over the age of 13. A total of 1,436 unfortunates perished that day. Only 13 men miraculously escaped.

To remember this period, a memorial has been built at the top of the village. A museum also traces the history of this once prosperous town before it was totally destroyed and plunged into mourning. In the square, you’ll also notice that the clock has been stopped to ensure that the innocent dead are always remembered.
