Tzitzikas kai Mermigas is a restaurant that has a special flavor for me. Because it is the first of a great series that I did when I arrived in Athens. I immediately liked the warmth of this place, the variety of dishes offered and I have been going back ever since. This has become a classic when I have guests at home who are discovering Greece for the first time.
Tzitzikas kai Mermigas: a concept developed in different neighborhoods
There are 4 restaurants “O Tzitzikas kai o Mermigas” in Athens in the following neighborhoods: Kifisia, Syntagma, Halandri and Ano Patisia.
The one in Syntagma will please you because its location is very central. And it’s a convenient lunch or dinner break.
The one in Kifisia is very pleasant because it is located in a small pedestrian street, and when you are on the terrace, it is a bit like being on a village square.
“O Tzitzikas kai o Mermigas” in Greek means The Cicada and The Ant in English
I’m not sure where this name comes from, but I dare to give you my personal interpretation.
In the manner of the ant, the founders went hunting for tables, chairs, vases, shelves and advertisements from all over Greece, then stored them in their restaurants. They then cleverly arranged them, which gives it a “vintage Greek grocery” feel.
They also went to the different regions of Greece to find the best ingredients and recipes to inspire them and develop their “Greek cuisine”.
In the service on the other hand, they have the carefree and cheerfulness of the Cicada. Generous on the portions, the welcome aperitif with Tsipouro offered, they are often also generous at the time of the bill with always a small sweet accompaniment.
These restaurants are ideal for large tables, the places are well suited, the welcome is friendly and the service efficient.
It is also possible to place an order. Very practical when you have people over and you don’t feel like cooking.
What do we eat at “Tzitzikas & Mermigas”?
On the menu, always very good classics (lentil or bean salads, kebab or meatballs). But also beautiful discoveries with Mediterranean flavors.
One of our favorite specialties is the “Mastihato“. It is a chicken fillet flavored with Mastiha of Chios (liquor made from Mastic resin, whose tree grows only on the island of Chios).
Don’t miss the Naxos grilled cheese with sesame seeds and honey, wrapped in a slice of bacon, the mussels flavored with herbs and white wine and the vegetarian mille feuille.
You won’t be able to choose as the menu is so varied and appetizing. Feel free to share your dishes and appetizers, as they are always very hearty. In addition, it will allow you to taste a little of everything.
The bill please…
For 4 people (2 adults and 2 children), we usually take 2 starters and 2 main courses.
It’s not the cheapest in Athens, but you won’t be disappointed. Starters cost around 8€ and main courses between 10€ and 15€.
Practical infos
Feel free to consult the 4 addresses of the restaurants and the opening hours according to the desired restaurant on their Website.
