Chatzis (χατζη in Greek) is a famous pastry shop – tea room (“coffee shop” would be more appropriate in this case). This institution, which has existed since 1908 in Thessaloniki, also has a store a stone’s throw from Syntagma Square. Ideal for a gourmet break in this lively neighborhood.

On the spot or to go?

You can make a quick stop on the first floor to order coffee or pastries to go. Indeed, various varieties of cakes and chocolates are displayed in the windows. There is something for everyone. A real paradise for gourmets!

If you have some time, sit upstairs around the tables surrounded by flowery armchairs or in one of the large sofas near the bay window.

Chatzis also has a few tables on the outdoor terrace overlooking the busy Mitropoleos Street.

A real Greek coffee!

One of the specialties of Chatzis is the “moula moustafa coffee“: a Greek coffee (note that we do not speak of “Turkish coffee” in Greece) prepared in the traditional way. That is to say, on the embers, in the briki (small tin or copper pan). The coffee here is accompanied by rose liqueur and a loukoum. This is probably one of the best Greek cafes in Athens. The secret is to taste it slowly, in small sips, until only the solid marc remains at the bottom (which is not drinkable).

Traditional pastries

Chatzis is famous for its oriental flavored sweets. So, let yourself be carried away by the sweet smells of cinnamon and dried fruits! Here you can taste baklava, kataifi (angel hair with chopped dried fruits), galaktoboureko (pastry with cream filling) and many others. Fans of syrupy cakes will be pleased, as these desserts are remarkably well executed. Try also the specialties made with buffalo milk.

Loukoums and other gourmet souvenirs

Finally, you will find at Chatzis tasty and original gifts to offer to your loved ones when you return home.

Here are some ideas:

  • traditional loukoums packaged in easy-to-carry boxes: plain or flavored with cloves, cinnamon, coffee, ginger or mint
  • pomegranate jam
  • gliko koutaliou (fruit in syrup) of aronia (small black berries)
  • pastries to be purchased the day before or the day of your departure and carried in your hand luggage on the plane. Sure, it’s a bit cumbersome but it’s a guaranteed success with your guests to accompany the story of your vacation in Greece at the coffee break.
