Visit the Cycladic Art Museum with a guide
To fully appreciate the visit to the Cycladic Art Museum and to understand the works on display, the best way is to take a guided tour.
A bit of history
The Museum of Cycladic Art of Athens is located in the heart of Kolonaki. It has a permanent collection allowing you to discover this very particular period dating from 3000 BC, born in the Cyclades islands. The figurines and pottery will fascinate you both in their simplicity and in their perfection. The museum also allows you to discover ancient Greece (from 5000 to 1000 BC), thanks to thematic friezes placing the ancient objects in their context and tracing the habits and customs of the time.
Museum of Cycladic Art: a museum on a human scale
This rich collection of Cycladic art was born from the passion of Nikolaos and Dolly Goulandris. She is spread over four small levels, creating a real atmosphere on each stage. Thanks to videos, photos, and scenarios, you can easily project yourself into the life of the time. On the other hand, some illustrated examples on the great moments of life, such as marriage, birth or games, bring to life the objects, incredible of finesse and artistic sense. That’s why children enjoy this museum so much.
The figures, with perfect lines, that the purity of the marble makes majestic and proud, are simply dazzling. They are of an astonishing modernity and have inspired famous artists such as Picasso or Modigliani.
The museum cafe: a stylish break
In this museum, everything is aesthetic, including the Cycladic Café with its cakes under glass, which echo the works exhibited in the premises and whose graphic ceiling, of a pure white, is decorated with wild vegetation. Moreover, for those who would not have time to visit the museum and who would like a few moments of zenitude in the heart of Athens, do not hesitate to stop there for a surprising lunch break in Kolonaki. You will be immersed in a design bubble. The menu, although a little expensive, presents an appetizing choice of salads, burgers and hot dishes. And especially beautiful desserts!
Dishes and eggs around 12-18€, sandwich 7-9€, dessert 6-8€.
The museum store: gift ideas
Finally, the store offers elegant reproductions of statues and jewelry and a nice selection of books, souvenirs for children and creations of Greek artists. Feel free to stop by after your visit!
