The virtues of putty or mastic (mastiha in Greek), this natural gum that comes from the island of Chios, are multiple. This product is therefore attracting the interest of the international scientific community.

The multiple virtues of putty for health

The putty has an anti-inflammatory activity. Thus, it acts effectively in case of periodontitis, esophagitis, gastritis or ulcer.

On the other hand, mastiha has important anti-oxidant properties and is beneficial for our body. Notable results have been noted regarding protection against atherosclerosis and cardiac disorders.

It also has a significant effect on liver function by activating detoxification. Cholesterol is thus absorbed and its level in the blood decreases, leading to a reduction in heart disease.

The putty is also known to act against certain viruses.

The putty, to fight against digestive disorders

This mastic or “mastiha” has an action in the prevention and therapy of digestive system disorders. Whether it is gastric disorders, dyspepsia, gastralgia, ulcers, heartburn, tympanic acid, pyloric infections or others. Therefore, chewing natural mastiha or swallowing mastiha powder is – according to clinical studies – a good solution for all those who suffer from stomach disorders. But also all those who wish to maintain their digestive system in good health. Recent clinical studies have highlighted the action and virtues of Chios mastic against the Helicobacter pylori bacterium as well as its contribution in the prevention and treatment of the symptoms of Crohn’s disease.

One of the other virtues of putty? It is a natural ally for a perfect oral hygiene

Putty helps to maintain healthy teeth, strengthen gums and generally ensure good oral hygiene. It has antimicrobial and antifungal activity against microbes that cause cavities, gingivitis and periodontitis.

In addition, it accelerates the healing of oral ulcers. It increases the course of saliva, thus ensuring protection for the teeth and tissues of the mouth and effectively fighting xerostomia. It also contributes to a better growth of the jawbone system. Hence its use in the composition of certain amalgams used for dental fillings.

And more…

Mastic is used as a constituent of healing strips and dressings for wounds or post-operative wounds as a skin regenerating factor. It is also used in the manufacture of certain surgical sutures that are self-absorbed by the body.

It is used in perfumery as a fragrance or perfume fixative. And again in cosmetics for regenerating skin care because it enhances the brightness and clarity of it.

Moreover, in Greece, mastic is often used in Greek cooking and baking. (For the gourmets, we give you Evi’s recipe for Panna cotta with Chios mastic).

Finally, one of the other virtues of mastic: it is said to have aphrodisiac effects.
