In the North of Greece, there is a region unknown to most tourists. This is Epirus. It includes a very preserved area in the mountains with beautiful rivers and the huge Vikos Gorge. This region will certainly appeal to all nature lovers who enjoy outdoor activities and sports. It is also a very beautiful region to discover by motor home (however, the crossing of certain villages can be a little complicated). We particularly enjoyed this place with our children. So, what to do in the Zagories in Epirus?

So here are some ideas on what to do in the zagories in Epirus ?
*****
1. Visit the villages
The Zagories comprise 46 villages spread over the entire Pinde National Park. These mountain villages are made up of stone houses with slate roofs.
During the period of Turkish occupation (between the 15th and 20th centuries), the villages of the Zagories had a somewhat special status. They were independent and could therefore trade freely. The inhabitants were therefore able to build small fortunes, which explains the wealthy houses and the incredible network of stone bridges and paths that connect them to each other.
You can easily stay in these villages which for some years now have been opening up to tourism. They have nevertheless managed to preserve a unique character because the establishments have taken over the traditional buildings, thus preserving the exceptional environment of the place. We advise you to stay in Papingo, Aristi or Kipi .

2. Discover the wonders of the Pindus natural park
The nature in the Zagories is incredible. You will be undoubtedly subjugated by its astonishing wonders.
The natural park is crossed first by the Vikos Gorge, the deepest canyon in Europe. The preserved places welcome a varied fauna including many protected species (bear, wolf, chamois, golden eagle…). In spring, you will also enjoy the wild flora. In the fall, you can go mushroom picking.
The geology of the place is amazing. Thus, the limestones formed natural pools a little above Papingo, but also real forests of stones near Monodendri. These are magical places to discover with your family.
Finally, the Voidomatis River is incredibly pure. It originates below Vikos and flows westwards. Of course, you won’t be able to splash around in its icy waters for long (6° to 9°), but you will enjoy rafting or walking along the very pretty hiking trail lined with plane trees.
