Located in the south of the island of Evia, on the heights of Karystos.
Montofoli Estate is a multi-faceted estate harmoniously orchestrated by the Karacostas family.
The history of the domain
The domain, with its rich and varied past, has been able to transform and adapt to its time while remaining in harmony.
Built on an ancient site you can still admire some pieces in situ (column, wine press), while other objects are kept in the museum of Karystos. The estate also bears the traces of the passage of the Venetians (the name of the estate and the big house are directly derived from it), from the Turkish occupation (the beautiful gardens, then called Pasha’s tea gardens) or of this merchant from Alexandria who at the end of the 19th century cultivated citrus trees on the terraces, setting up an ingenious irrigation system.
Thus, the current cellar is a fine example of the succession of eras. It was originally a Christian church, which was later converted into a stable during the Turkish occupation and is now a wine cellar for the estate’s wine. The dovecote also illustrates this rich past: it dates from 1877 and was built on the site of an ancient Roman bath.
A family project to rebuild a wine estate
*yuhThe Karacostas family acquired the property in 1986 and planted vines on some of the terraces. A colossal work was undertaken to give life to this place. The estate now produces an original sweet wine made from four varieties of grape. It can be purchased directly at the property or on www.cellier.gr.
Staying at the Montofoli estate
You can stay in the estate, run by Mariani and her daughter Danae. Of Swedish origin, they both speak English perfectly. They will receive you warmly and simply in one of the three houses (the big red house, the pigeon house or the belvedere). All three have very different styles (modern, traditional or authentic) but all have a particular charm. Each of them can accommodate up to 6 people. Montofoli can also host large parties or events (weddings or family reunions for example). In addition, you can enjoy the swimming pool, located on the property.
The domain is not accessible to cars which makes it very safe with children. In addition, the small garden is particularly well suited to games of hide-and-seek and soccer.
Phaidon Project: an incredible all-inclusive week-long stay
The winery offers a unique experience to discover the history, culture and nature of South Evia. During one week, you will stay at the domain and will be escorted by a guide. Moreover, the stay includes the discovery of the local gastronomy through lunches and dinners in the best taverns but also visits to farms.
This all-inclusive stay is for groups (minimum 6 people), curious about Greece and its history and lovers of good things. Program and prices to discover on the following link.
In short, Montofoli Estate is recommended to all those who are looking for calm and authenticity.
