Here are some tips and practical information to help you plan your vacation on Amorgos Island like how to get to Amorgos, the best season….

1- What’s the best season to visit Amorgos?

Amorgos is a quiet island, with the exception of July and August, when there are many tourists (especially French).

Nevertheless, as accommodation capacity is limited, theisland is not “overrun” with tourists like some other Cycladic islands.

The ideal time to visit Amorgos is undoubtedly spring, around Easter. This gives you the chance to witness the traditions associated with this festival, which is widely celebrated in Greece (note that these are the dates of Orthodox Easter). On this occasion, the icons are taken out of the monastery and carried in procession to different parts of the island. What’s more, the island is usually in full bloom at this time of year, making it even more beautiful. Finally, temperatures are milder than in summer.

2- How many days do I need to stay in Amorgos?

The island of Amorgos is not very large. Nevertheless, we recommend staying for at least 3 days if you want to see the whole island and go hiking and/or enjoy the beaches. You can stay for a week without getting bored.

3- How do I get to Amorgos?

Amorgos is the easternmost of the Cyclades islands. It is not easily accessible, which is one of the reasons why it has been preserved from mass tourism.

Ferries from Piraeus run alternately to the two Amorgos ports (Katapola and Aigiali). The crossing takes between 5 and 10 hours, depending on the boat.

There are also connections to/from other Cycladic islands: Sifnos, Paros, Syros, Santorini and Koufounisi. Finally, thanks to the small Skopelitis ferry, Amorgos is well connected to the island of Naxos and the smaller Cyclades.

If you choose to take a speedboat, beware: although the trip is faster, it can be very uncomfortable for those who suffer from seasickness (it shakes when the wind blows). Be careful, too, as hydrofoils are not available on windy days.

There are several websites for booking ferry tickets to the Greek islands. They are very practical, as they allow you to pay by credit card , and print your tickets before departure. We recommend the Ferry Hopper website which we use on a personal basis. And best of all, there are no commissions or service charges.

Alternatively, you can enjoy a superb one-week sailing cruise in the Cyclades with Clikandboat, an agency for chartering sailing yachts and catamarans, with or without a skipper.

4- Getting around Amorgos

  • Amorgos has a good bus service. Information and timetables on the Amorgos Bus Company website
  • Several cabs operate on the island.
  • The best way to discover the island is to rent a car.

We recommend that you reserve your car before you leave on vacation, especially if you are traveling during the high tourist season.
