Kythnos is an island renowned for its beaches, and not by chance. Indeed, most of the beaches on Kythnos are real gems. Nestled in pretty coves, the turquoise waters contrast with the red soil of the land. This is also the island of the legendary Kolona beach, a veritable tongue of sand between two bays.

The most beautiful beaches in Kythnos
Here are some of the most beautiful beaches we’ve visited. Of course, this is just a selection: the full list can be found on the Kythnos tourist office website.
Kolona
First and foremost, of course, is the famous Kythnos beach, often cited as one of the most beautiful in Greece. For it has the extraordinary feature of stretching between two back-to-back bays. Not to be missed, this is a unique and wonderfully beautiful place.
Naturally, this marvel attracts many visitors, including luxury yachts. So take a few precautions, as it can quickly turn into a nightmare of a visit to a hyper-touristy place.
5 tips for enjoying Kolona beach
1. It’s crowded, so it’s best to avoid weekends and peak hours (from noon onwards). In the morning, on the other hand, it’s very pleasant. Arrive early and you’ll feel like you’re all alone in the world
2. How do I get there? Take a cab boat to Merichas. Anthony offers a round trip for 10 euros, half price for children (tel: +30 228 103 22 91 or +30 694 490 65 68). It runs every hour or so from 10:30 am. The road is very bad and not recommended if you don’t have a 4×4. But you can go as far as Apokrissi, then finish your journey on foot (2.5km).
3. There’s no shade and it can get very hot! Three small trees, not really bushy, around which we crowd. It’s best to take an umbrella, sun cream, sunglasses and a hat…. A few deckchairs and umbrellas, but they’re overcrowded and the prices are exorbitant (€10/transat).
4. A tavern
Kolona Bar
is right on the beach, and the food is very good, but reservations are recommended. It can get pretty crowded there too. Higher prices than other taverns on the island.
5. A little tip: next to Kolona beach is Fykiada beach, also accessible via the landing stage. At the end: a tavern and a clump of trees. A great alternative!
Agios Stefanos
This beach is very popular for its location. It is located in a bay well protected from the wind and enjoys the shade of many tamarisk trees.
Naoussa
Very pretty sandy beach, accessible via a dirt track after a short walk. This beach is ultra-quiet, but not very shady. It also has no tavern.
Potamia
Located near Loutra, this beach is very wild. It owes its calm to its remote location and difficult access (dirt road). No tavernas and flat pebble beach.
Loutra
This sandy beach, located in the village, has a few trees and deckchairs. Close to the port, it offers a wide range of tavernas. At the end of the beach is a hot-water pool fed directly by natural springs.
Kanala
A large sandy beach, with a lovely seafront promenade sheltered by pine trees. It leads to a church and a large square where you can enjoy a meal.
Apokrissi
This is one of our favorite beaches. It has many advantages. Firstly, the road to get there is very good. What’s more, the sandy beach is large and well protected by tamarisk trees. There are also bars, taverns and inflatable games for children in summer. Deckchair hire available.
Martinakia
Located close to the port of Marihas, it has the great advantage of being within walking distance of the port. It is shaded and has a snack bar on site.
