Karystos today a peaceful seaside town located in the south of the island of Evia. It was once a powerful city during the Peloponnesian wars and was later marked by the Venetian presence. The presence of Castelo Rosso on the heights (village of Myli) makes us think that the city was first established in the mountains before getting closer to the sea.
Today the town has 7000 inhabitants. Slate mining on Mount Ochi is still one of the main resources of the region. Nevertheless, it also has a quality agricultural production around wine and cattle. It also strives to develop responsible tourism.
Although small, the city offers a wide range of possibilities:
- On the sea side, the bay of Karystos is protected and offers many quiet and protected beaches.
- Going up the slopes of Mount Ochi, you will enjoy an exceptional view and you will quickly find yourself in mountain landscapes (river, forests). It is a starting point for several hikes.
- In the village, you will love the small fishing port, lined with many cafes and the lively Amalias platform.
Where to eat in Karystos?
We recommend :
- the Cavo doro: Small restaurant in a narrow street. The dishes are displayed behind a glass case. Useful for choosing. We recommend fava beans, eggplant stuffed with onions and squid with spinach.
- Kima: on the right after the cemetery behind Apollo Aetos. The location of this tavern is ideal with children, as it overlooks a small sandy beach. You can taste very good lamb.
- Lapolasfi sto patamaki: a simple kitchen in a beautiful setting in Myli. In height, therefore cooler in summer.
Where to swim near Karystos?
- Gallida: This is the main beach on the west side of Karystos and is shaded by tamarisk trees. Very accessible, it will appeal to families.
- Aghia Paraskevi: Further west, about 20 minutes by car. The beach is smaller but the white sand contrasts with turquoise waters. Small guinguette on the beach.
- Aetos: East of Karystos, several sandy coves.
