Find a hotel in Piraeus: our best-of!

hotel in Piraeus

Many of you make a stopover in Piraeus. In fact, Piraeus remains Athens’ biggest port, and most of the Greek islands, notably the Cyclades and Crete, are served from this port. And when the boat is due to leave early in the morning, it’s handy to sleep in Piraeus so as not to miss the ferry. So, to help you find a hotel in Piraeus, here is our selection:

  1. No Stress: hotels less than 10 minutes’ walk from the port of Piraeus
  2. quiet place: a hotel in the back streets of Piraeus,
  3. nice evening: a hotel close to Piraeus Marina

Where is Piraeus?

Piraeus is located some ten kilometers south of Athens, and is a full-fledged part of the metropolitan area. Often referred to as the port of Athens, Piraeus actually comprises three ports.

  • First, the pier, which is called Koumoundourou. This is where the ferries to the islands depart from. The place is huge, with 12 gates spread over almost 3 kilometers of quays. Be sure to check your departure point on your ticket.
  • Next, the marina Zea which borders the old town. Here, it’s more pleasure boats that dock. The atmosphere is pleasant. Terrace dining along the seafront.
  • Finally, Mikrolimano literally the little port. Traditionally a fishing port. The port is cramped, and the road along it is often congested, but you’ll find good fish restaurants.

Piraeus is well connected to Athens city center and the airport. Public and private transport are plentiful. To find out more about how to get to the port of Piraeus, take a look at our article.

Where to sleep in Piraeus?

Most people come to sleep in Piraeus out of necessity, rather than tourist interest. If you have a bit of time, we recommend that you sleep in the center of Athens where you can spend a pleasant evening. But necessity being the law, if you have no choice but to find a hotel in Piraeus, here’s our advice.

We spent a whole day with Laure wandering the quays and streets of the city to find the best hotels in Piraeus…. not easy and sometimes even a little depressing. But to make sure this stopover isn’t too stressful or full of unpleasant surprises, we’ve put together a best-of list for you. It is based on very objective criteria: proximity to the pier and marina, comfort of the premises, type of room and price.

All the establishments advised us to book early for the summer. They are in great demand, and prices soar in July and August.

This selection is ideal for those who want their hotel to be within walking distance of the pier. These hotels are not located in the nicest part of Piraeus, but they are convenient.

TRITON – Tsamadou 8, Piraeus 185 31

Triton Hotel Piraeus is undoubtedly one of the hotels closest to the pier. It’s located in a large, rather ugly building on the outside, which contrasts with a rather pretentious entrance (gilding and uniformed bellboy). Nevertheless, the welcome is friendly and the staff are used to dealing with travelers passing through. The rooms are functional, but seemed a little expensive for their standing.

  • Comfort: comfortable, clean but not charming
  • Near : Landing Stage (Gate E8) 450m, Marina 1,2km
  • Prices*: €70 to €120 (summer) for a standard double room €100 to €180 (summer) for a family room.

ANITA HOTEL – Notara 25, Piraeus 185 31
hotel anita in Piraeus, Athens

Anita Hotel wasn’t brand new when we visited in 2019, but the renovated rooms have been modernized. Considering the price, the rooms are quite decent and clean. What’s more, the hotel is located in a quiet street and has free private parking.

  • Comfort: renovated rooms, some of which are small but functional. Communicating rooms are available for families.
  • Near: Landing Stage (Gate E8) 650m, Marina 1,1km

Piraeus City Hotel is super convenient! Here, everything is done to make the traveler’s life simple and efficient. First of all, the hotel is very well located. Then, in the lobby, a huge map showing the different platforms makes it easy to find your way around. There’s also a screen with real-time boat schedules and docks. The hotel also has a large number of rooms (some renovated, others not)… which perhaps makes it a little noisy at the height of the season. And last but not least, the restaurant on the top floor allows those who don’t feel up to going out to dine in.

  • Comfort: Renovated rooms. Family rooms are also available.
  • Near: Landing stage (gate E8) 650m, Marina 600m
  • Price*: from €50-60 (winter) to €90-100 (summer) double room
  • Breakfast: €8 not included in room rate
  • Reservations at Piraeus City Hotel
HOTELS NEAR THE SUBWAY: a word of warning

There are a number of hotels close to the metro, often offering very low prices (from €30 to €40 a night). We went there and visited some of them. Unfortunately, while these establishments may be attractive for their proximity, we don’t recommend them. We found them dirty and unwelcoming.

A hotel in the quiet streets of Piraeus

The following selection of hotels is ideal for those looking for a quiet retreat from noisy, congested streets… Although they are relatively close to the pier (700m to 1.2km maximum) and can be reached on foot, we strongly recommend you book a cab. Cabs are not too expensive (between €5 and €20). If you’re with family or loaded with luggage, you’ll appreciate being taken straight to your dock.

This selection will suit those who want to spend a pleasant evening in Piraeus. There are many restaurants and bars along the marina. A little vacation before you leave for the islands. This hotel has two main qualities. Firstly, it’s very close to the Marina, which makes for a great evening out. The second quality is to offer customers a free shuttle service. The hotel’s minibus can accompany you free of charge to and from the metro, airport bus or pier (to your departure or arrival dock).

  • Comfort: renovated rooms. Family rooms.

LILIA HOTEL – Zeas 131, Piraeus 185 34
Lilia Hotel in Piraeus, Athens

We change neighborhoods a little as we approach the Marina. There’s an air of vacation here as you catch a glimpse of the boats at the end of the street. The hotel doesn’t exude modernity, with its marble and antique sculptures. But prices are reasonable, and by cab you’re just 5 minutes from the pier.

  • Comfort: Decoration and bathroom fittings a little dated.
  • Near : Ferry Landing (gate E8) 1,2km, Marina 200m
  • Price*: around €35 (winter) from €50 to €80 (summer) for a double room
  • Breakfast: included in room rate
  • Book a room at Lilia Hotel
NOUFARA – Iroon Polytechniou 45, Pireaus 185 35
Hotel Noufara in Piraeus, Athens
Noufara © Booking

We have kept Noufara in our selection because he is well placed and not too expensive. Nevertheless, the hotel is ultra kitsch with its mosaics, sculptures and brown marble. The hotel faces a busy street, which can be noisy. So remember to ask for rooms overlooking the courtyard.

  • Comfort: dated bedding and decor.
  • Near : Ferry landing (gate E8) 750m, Marina 500m
  • Price*: €70 to €90 (summer) double room
  • Breakfast: €8 if not included in room rate
  • Reserve a room at Noufara
