We’re often asked: “Which Greek islands have an airport and are therefore easily accessible by plane? Depending on the length of your vacation and your budget, it can sometimes be more interesting to take a domestic flight or a direct flight from international. The ferry is certainly a more exotic means of transport, but it can sometimes cost precious hours.

That’s why we’ve listed here the Greek islands with airports , which are easily accessible by plane from Athens in particular, or even from an international airport.

Where are the different Greek islands?

Saronic, Ionian, Sporades… Don’t these names mean anything to you? So don’t panic, we’ll help you find your way around the many Greek islands:

The various Greek islands: Cyclades, Dodecanese, Ionian Islands, Sporades, Saronic Islands…

In a nutshell:

  • First of all, the famous Cyclades, the islands in the middle of the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey.
  • The Ionian Islands are located to the far west of mainland Greece and the Peloponnese, in the Ionian Sea on the southern side of Italy. Except for the special situation of Kythera.
  • Then there are the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea, to the east of the Cyclades and along the Turkish coast.
  • The Sporades are located in the Aegean Sea, opposite the Pelion region of mainland Greece.
  • The North Aegean islands (Βόρειο Αιγαίο), are of course in the Aegean Sea. More to the east of the Cyclades and Sporades, and to the north of the Dodecanese islands.
  • And finally, Crete, the largest and southernmost of the Greek islands, lies in the Mediterranean Sea, south-east of the Peloponnese.
