It’s true, Greece is best known as a summer destination. However, if you come to Greece in winter, you’ll find some very pleasant places to spend a few days off. Here’s our selection of winter destinations.

1- Major cities: Athens and Thessaloniki

If you come to Greece in winter, the big cities are a prime destination. Whether in Athens or Thessaloniki, there’s no shortage of things to do: archaeological sites and monuments, museums, shopping, city walks, good restaurants and tavernas, spas and hammams, lively nightlife… you’ll be spoilt for choice. Even if the sun doesn’t shine, you’re sure not to get bored.

Our advice: In Athens, did you know that you can bathe in warm waters outdoors, even in the middle of winter? To do so, head for Lake Vouliagmeni, some 20km south of the Greek capital.

2- Skiing in Greece, a unique experience

If you’re spending your winter vacations in Greece, make the most of it by going skiing for a day or two. Whether in Kalavrita (Peloponnese) or on Mount Parnassus (near Arachova), you’ll have a great time. Admittedly, the Greek ski resorts don’t rival the big ones in the Alps… but the atmosphere is friendly and family-friendly. And on sunny days, you can even ski with a glimpse of the sea in the distance.

The advice of Live Athens: Combine a ski weekend with a cultural visit. Delphi and skiing on Mount Parnassus, for example. Or Kalavrita and Corinth. Very nice!

3- A winter in Greece by the fire

After skiing or long walks in the forest, there’s nothing like the comforting warmth of an open fire. There are many mountain villages in Greece, with traditional stone buildings or chalets in which to warm up by the fire. Friendly atmosphere guaranteed.

Our advice: for example Elatos Resort & Health Club close to the ski slopes of Mount Parnassus. This establishment offers accommodation in wooden and stone chalets, all equipped with a living room with fireplace. With the added bonus of mountain views and a heated indoor pool.

4- Meteora and Thessaly

Thessaly is a region that can be visited all year round. Far from mass tourism, you’ll discover peaceful countryside, stone-built villages, friendly locals and top-quality gastronomy. And of course, the superb Meteora! A region to discover, without unnecessary folklore, but with all that remains of authentic traditions and daily customs.

5- Patras carnival

The Patras carnival is very famous. Greece’s biggest carnival and one of the largest in Europe. It always runs from January 17 (St. Anthony’s Day) to Pur Monday. The town is well worth a visit during this period, with a succession of parades, songs, dances and children’s entertainment. The festival reaches its climax on the final weekend, with a grand parade, treasure hunt and fireworks display.

Our advice: Patras is very busy during Carnival, so book your accommodation in advance. For example, you’ll find plenty of offers on the Booking website.

6- Pelion

Pelion is a great destination for winter vacations in Greece. This region combines winter sports (Agriolefkès ski resort), outdoor activities and visits to mountain villages. With the added bonus of splendid scenery, authentic comfort food and plenty of hiking trails.

Our tip: stay in one of Pelion’s traditional villages, such as Makrinitsa, Portaria or Tsagarada.

7- Rhodes, far from the hordes of summer visitors

Winter is a good time to discover the island of Rhodes. Very popular with tourists in July and August, the island becomes quieter out of season, much to our delight. Of course, you won’t be able to enjoy the island’s many beaches… but you will have the medieval town all to yourself! There are also numerous walks and interesting museums all over the island. Having been to Rhodes in summer and winter, we can assure you that it’s a luxury to visit Rhodes when it’s not saturated with tourists.

Our advice: Stay in the medieval town in winter. It has a lot of charm and you’ll easily find something to eat in the evenings. There’s a great choice of accommodation on Booking.

8- Northern Greece

Take advantage of winter to discover destinations off the beaten track. Northern Greece is home to some real treasures, untouched by mass tourism and well worth a visit. Discover authentic regions, hikes, nature activities… a host of surprises await you!

Our advice We particularly recommend visiting Epirus and the Zagories. Or the little-known Metsovo region.

9- Santorini in winter

Let’s be honest, winter is not the best time to visit Santorini, as many shops and hotels are closed. Nevertheless, visiting Santorini in winter is not out of the question. First of all, this means affordable rates (whereas summer prices are unreasonably high). But also to discover this quiet island-star. Winter is the perfect season for those who can’t stand the crowds or the dripping luxury, but still want to admire Santorini. In summer and winter alike, the scenery remains spectacular.

Our tip: on the Booking website, you’ll find plenty of luxury apartments and hotels, at bargain prices in winter. It’s time to make the most of it!

10- Relax in a guesthouse unlike any other

Looking for a simple, authentic place where you’ll feel like you’re among friends? Then try the Archontiko guest house in Anavriti at the foot of Mount Taygetos (Peloponnese). We haven’t been there ourselves yet, but the place comes highly recommended.

This guest house is located in the heart of the mountains, in a former manor house. The owner, Maria offers tasty cuisine, you can even take a cooking class with her. As for Georges, her husband, he is a mountain guide and can take you on some of the region’s most beautiful hikes. And he’ll play a few musical notes for you in the evening. Reasonable prices and a warm welcome. A place with a soul, full of goodness and beauty!
