Atlantikos is a small restaurant, which in some respects could be classified as a dive, but which serves excellent fish and seafood. A friend who lives in the Psyri district introduced us to it. And that’s a good thing, because we have to admit we couldn’t have found it on our own! But what a pleasant surprise. A simple, unpretentious address off the beaten tourist track, in a neighborhood bursting with energy. It’s our turn to take you there.
Where is Atlantikos?
Ah, we’ve got to find that restaurant! Yet it’s just a stone’s throw from Monastiraki Square, in the Psyri district. But he’s hiding in a narrow alley with graffiti-covered walls. We wouldn’t necessarily have committed to it. A few tables occupy the pavement. The street is pedestrianized, so you can sit back and relax. Right across the street from a very pleasant place to relax: Polis Hammam.
Not a single tourist at Atlantikos… the place is mainly frequented by local regulars.
And what’s it like?
Honestly, at first glance, Atlantikos doesn’t look like much. And yet the restaurant is fully booked every night.
The decor is simplistic. Tables are set up outside, in the ground-floor dining room overlooking the kitchen, or on the second floor.
A relaxed, casual and friendly atmosphere. If you’re looking for a romantic restaurant for an evening out in Athens, this is not the place. If, on the other hand, you’re in the mood for a no-frills, somewhat improbable place, and are a seafood lover, then go for it. After all, the fish is fresh, the food tasty and well-seasoned. The cuisine is simple but authentic.
What should I order?
The menu at Atlantikos is short, with around ten dishes on offer (you can request a menu in English). Alongside the menu, the waiter brings you an order book on which the day’s fish and dishes are noted.
We recommend :
- The “seafood platter“: an assortment of fried fish and seafood (squid, shrimp, small fry). To share as an appetizer, light and not too fatty, ideal to whet the appetite.
- The “cod and chips” aka fish&chips. A little greasy, but good.
- Fish soup for those who want to discover a traditional Greek dish. It is a rustic dish, a vegetable soup with a few pieces of fish.
- Fresh fish of the day, usually bought at the nearby central market, prepared grilled or fried: anchovies, sardines, white fish, tuna kebabs, etc.
- We also recommend the fava.
We recommend you order several dishes, place them in the center of the table and share.
Sprinkle with retsina (resinated white wine) or ouzo.
And the price?
It’s reasonable, really very reasonable. It costs between €7 and €15 per person, excluding drinks. Excellent value for money.
In short, a nice address off the beaten track. And if you’re not sure at first, don’t be fooled by appearances and put your trust in us. Try it, you won’t be disappointed.
