Meteora is a popular tourist destination, and there’s no shortage of accommodation. However, some establishments can hold unpleasant surprises (as some of our friends and family have experienced). We therefore only recommend establishments that have been tested and recommended by ourselves or by close friends as good places to find where to stay in Meteora.

Where to stay to visit Meteora?

For visit Meteora you’ll need to stay in the small town of Kalambaka or in the village of Kastraki.

You’ll love Kalambaka for its practicality: bus and cab services, train station, numerous restaurants, cafés and bars…
(detailed in the following article)
.

As for the village of Kastraki, it’s literally nestled in the landscape, with a charm all its own for nature lovers. In addition, numerous footpaths run through the village, offering the chance to discover the monasteries on foot.

Small charming hotels

Guest house in Kastraki. Situated at the top of the village, at the foot of the cliffs, in a peaceful setting. The guesthouse offers spacious, comfortable rooms, in apartments or suites.

Small, family-run hotel in Kastraki. Very well located in the village. Good value for money. Ask for a room in the renovated section, which are modern and comfortable. You can also request a family room for 4 or 5 people.

The guest house has been designed in the monastic style, with stone walls and simple decor. With its swimming pool overlooking the meteor site, the setting is enchanting. Located right next to the station, it’s very convenient for travelers arriving by train. The center of Kalambaka is also within walking distance.

Very well located in Kalambaka, at the start of a hiking trail. You can walk to one of the monasteries and watch the sun set over the Meteora… magical. The family rooms are spacious, with a magnificent view of Meteora from the balcony. Good value for money.

The hotel is housed in a traditional house with an old-fashioned, kitsch decor. But it’s well located and you can walk into the village, which is handy for going out for dinner in the evening. You can also reach the monasteries on foot. The atmosphere here is authentically Greek. Here too, the rooms boast a magnificent view of the Meteora.

Large hotels with swimming pools

For many, it’s a little extra that quickly becomes indispensable during the hot summer months. Functional, these large hotels unfortunately lack charm in some cases. Here are just a few of them, along with their advantages.

Be careful not to confuse it with the Grand Hotel. Prices are reasonable and the establishment boasts a beautiful view and swimming pool. It is ideally located in Kastraki. On the other hand, the rooms and restaurant lack charm and are noisy. The hotel often offers last-minute discounts to fill its many rooms.

It’s a large complex, lacking a little charm and set back from the main road. You have to take your car to get to the restaurant in the evening. On the other hand, it offers a large swimming pool, with deckchairs and parasols, suitable for both young and old. For families, the rooms are very spacious and you can have a triple room next to a double room. Remember to ask for a room that doesn’t overlook the road. Finally, on the service side: the breakfast buffet is generous and the hotel has an Internet corner for teenagers.

It’s a huge hotel,“not one of the charmings, but very good for children” (says Séverine). It offers communicating rooms (2 parents + 3 children). The pool is very large but not secure. Finally, the staff are friendly (even in the middle of August!).

Apartments and studios

Where to stay in Meteora? Apartments and studios can be a good alternative. In fact, many of our premises offer accommodation for rent. You’ll find them on AirBnb, of course, but also on Booking. The two apartments we have selected have not yet been tested. Nevertheless, we think it’s worth mentioning them. Firstly, because they are well placed. Secondly, because they’re inexpensive, especially for families with two or three children. And finally, because they allow you to stay for a few days without necessarily having to go to restaurants or taverns twice a day.

There are also many accommodations offered by AirBnB. Be sure to look at the reviews and the precise location.

For small budgets

  • Spanias Hotel To be tested soon. We chose it for its location and low budget. What’s more, it has plenty of rooms if you’re traveling in a group.
  • Campsites: there are four campsites close to Meteora, which you can find on the tourist office website. We haven’t tested them yet. But it looks like Camping Kastraki is a good place to stay. It has an on-site restaurant and even a swimming pool for less than €10 per person in a tent.

Fancy a stopover on the road between Meteora and Athens?

On your way from Athens to Meteora, you can make a detour to Lake Plastiras. It’s like being in Switzerland! And there’s a hotel there that we really like: the Montanema Handmade Village hotel, set in superb surroundings. A warm and authentic place, with a lot of charm. A guaranteed favorite!
