If you’re wondering what to do in Milos, we’d definitely recommend a visit to Plaka. Cobbled streets, white houses, a church with a rounded dome… there’s no doubt that when you arrive in Plaka, you know you’re in the Cyclades ! The administrative capital of the island of Milos, this hilltop village is also the heart of the island.

Strolling through the maze of alleyways of Plaka is a real delight. Allow three hours to stroll along the narrow cobbled streets lined with flower-filled houses, contemplate the view of the sea and surrounding islets from the church square (and feel free to enter the richly decorated interior of the church) and climb the Kastro.

And it would be a shame to leave Plaka without visiting the Archaeological Museum, where you can see, among other things, a copy of the famous Venus (Aphrodite) of Milos. But the real gem of the museum is “The Lady of Filakopi”, a small clay figurine with incredibly modern lines, dating back to 1,200 BC.

Climbing to the top of the Kastro

One of the must-see things to do in Milos is to climb to the top of the Kastro, the rocky peak that rises above the village of Plaka and is crowned by a church. In the Middle Ages, it was used as a refuge from pirate attacks.

The ascent is via irregular stone steps. It takes about ten minutes. We recommend you go at the end of the day to avoid the heat, but above all to admire the sunset over the sea.

At the top, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the island and the sea. You can see the arid mountains, the white villages, the churches with their characteristic domes, and the blue sea. A truly exceptional panorama !

Admire the sunset over the sea

Less well known than the sunsets on Santorini, yet just as spectacular, the sunsets on the island of Milos are well worth a visit. At the end of the day, the sun declines and falls gently into the sea. The sky takes on pink and orange hues. It’s a cliché, but it’s still magical.

The best places to watch the sunset in Plaka are :

  • the top of the kastro
  • the church esplanade overlooking the abyss
  • the Utopia café, with its panoramic terrace.

Eating, drinking and shopping in Plaka

After a stroll around Plaka, a break for a bite to eat or a drink is very welcome. It’s a great way to prolong the moment and soak up the atmosphere of this charming village.

Where to have a drink in Plaka?

Without hesitation, at Café Utopia ! Located in the center of the village, it boasts a beautiful panoramic terrace with an incredible view of the sea.

It’s the perfect place to admire the sunset while sipping a cocktail! A word of advice: it sells out fast in summer. It’s best to arrive early to get a front-row seat (before 7pm).

Also very pleasant in the morning for a good breakfast in a postcard setting.

Where to eat?

We recommend Archondoula, a traditional tavern with a few tables in a charming alleyway. The interior (a former kafeneion) is well worth a look. A la carte, perfectly executed Greek specialties. Tasty food at reasonable prices (around €15 per person). Warm atmosphere.
